Just found your podcast and I've been really enjoying it. Thanks! I'm just part way through listening to this one & just needed to say that some of the points Steph is giving about animals: grass-fed beef being worse for the environment, chickens being pumped w hormone, buying naturally caught fish, aren't entirely accurate. The chicken fact is actually completely inaccurate. Grass-fed beef has just as much environmental impact as grain fed, but for different reasons (greater land use, significantly more methane production). Wild-caught fish needs to be done sustainably. Farmed fish needs to also be done in an environmentally sustainable way. All systems also have a variety of pros and cons when it comes to the welfare of the animals produced. Just wanted to point this out, just as it's important to debunk myths around how food is produced as well as what we eat (high carb diets). Thanks for the great podcast again!

Re: FB #169 What It Takes

The way it comes across as requiring complete desperation at any cost to reach kona for age groups is concerning. I don't disagree with this thinking. However, that path can lead to broken families and destroyed lives. Perhaps the role of the coach might be to help keep perspective for the types of people who are able / desire to push themselves to that extent. There is no great reward for age group athletes really. It's just a sport for some fun. No one gives a dime who is AG world champ for an age group. Great pod cast, thought provoking.

Re: FB# 160 – Why it Pays to Have A Winning Attitude with Scott Jones

Super interview. Thank You!" for a terrific podcast with Grant Giles. I've got a great story for you...use it as a badge of honor to celebrate your life's work...

I begin my triathlon journey three and a half years ago inspired by my good friend Scott Rigsby, the first double-amputee to complete the Kona Ironman in 2007. In that time, I completed 5 Half-Ironmans and decided to step it up this year to do Ironman Coeur d'Alene.

After training for five months, I entered my taper at the beginning of June, but it was in traveling up to Central California to pick up my daughter from college that I discovered the Fat Black Podcast three weeks before my race. Over the course of my drive, I listened to at least 4 episodes, especially this interview with Grant Giles.

This podcast was just what I needed to mentally prepare for IMCDA. I knew my physical training had gone well. I knew I could do all the distances and I was healthy going into the race, but this being my first full Ironman, I had no idea how all the pieces would come together. I knew if the weather was good and I raced well, I had it in me to finish under 13 hours (at least I thought so...).

The week before the race, the name of the race was changed from Coeur d'Alene to Coeur d'FLAME with estimated race day temperatures between 105 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit. But what could I or anyone else do?

Your podcasts about mental preparation, the judgments we make and the scripts we live by were ESSENTIAL and so helpful for me knowing that I was up against major heat and elements that would test everyone on the course from the pros to the age-groupers.

So, I just let the race be what it was going to be, trusted my training (and God!), and practiced visualizing each discipline of my race, adjusted my expectations, made it a major goal to listen to my body and take care of it, and stay positive throughout the day. As the heat built in the days leading up to the race, I allowed and told myself to add a minimum of an hour to adjust to the heat. Word on the street was that the event was either going to be canceled or cut down to a 70.3.

My key goal was just to cross the finish line, stay healthy and enjoy the day, but based upon my previous Half-Ironmans, I did have a time target fourth down my list.

All that said, come race day, I was ready and at peace to enjoy my first Ironman.

Swim: Right on track with my estimated time.

Bike: Bike target time without the heat was 7 hours. Finish time: 7:11

Throughout the swim and the bike, my key goal was to stay present. To just be right where I was at, a point you and Grant emphasized again and again in the podcast.

At Mile 81 on the bike, I passed a guy on the bike and asked how he was doing. The heat was a bit like riding through an "Easy Bake Oven," but when the guy mumbled, "Suffering...", it was then that I realized, "I'm doing pretty good here."

Pacing myself, staying present and sticking to my plan to save my legs (again, based on wisdom I gleaned from your podcasts), all contributed to staying my course. Lest anyone misunderstand me, it was a tough, tough race, but adjusting expectations made all the difference in the world.

Run: My target time was under 4:30, but I knew I was in for a run/walk to keep my heart rate down. I really wanted to save myself for a strong 6 mile finish. That said, tons of people were walking under the oppression of the 106 degree heat (quite a few vomiting along the way).

At the 20 mile turnaround, I looked at my watch. It was 7:10 PM. Before me was my longest final hill with a couple rollers in the final six miles. This was "The Moment of Truth" and I went for it. I powered up the hill and over the final 6.2 miles, only had two more short walk breaks. My final six miles were the strongest of the whole race.

Crossing the finish line, Mike Riley gave me a great shout out for completing my first Ironman under 14 hours at 13:57.

Having my wife, four children, Scott Rigsby and other good friends to cheer me to the finish was the delicious frosting on the cake.

Three weeks later, as people are still asking me how the race was, I am humbled--almost embarrassed-- but delighted to say, "I had a great race! It was a dream come true."

I can't tell you enough how helpful your podcast was in preparing me for my race. Kudos to you and your team! I'll be pushing and promoting the podcast and Trispecific to all my friends. Feel free to use my story to encourage others with what you do. You helped me have a great day, the memory of a lifetime, and a surge of confidence in the days ahead. So many wonderful lessons learned. For this, I am so grateful!

Best to you,
Joey O'Connor
San Clemente, CA

PS: To my surprise, I finished in the top 24% of my 50-54 age division. The reason I went 10.40 in my first (and to date only) IM, and ran a marathon PB in the race was because I decided to follow the TS blueprint and not worry about what programs/key sessions my mates were doing. I did the vast majority of my training solo so I could concentrate on the session (and also because of juggling family/work commitments). First, and, most important is Sodium/Salt requirements for exercise is HIGHLY variable depending on the athlete's genes, physical size & gender, the environmental conditions etc. So when we are talking about needing much higher sodium intake levels to be able to perform in the heat & humidity we are talking about this relative to the athlete their previous intake levels. When cool to cold the requirements relative to warm to hot temperatures will be significantly less. A lot of people make this mistake and wind up with sausage fingers....

Now female athletes need to take special note to play with their sodium intake and be mindful of changing the levels depending upon where they are in their menstrual cycle. At that "special" time of the month (mid-luteal) a bit too much sodium can exacerbate swelling. During menses I suspect sodium levels will need to increase to maintain sweat rate during exercise and this shift from watching the sodium to needing some may be a nexus where female athletes need to be especially aware.

As I mentioned in the podcast as the athlete adapts to the heat the body will tend to conserve electrolytes, including sodium, so as your summer season progresses so, too, will your sodium requirement. The take-home is this is a moving target which the athlete needs to be aware of the factors, be willing to experiment, even make mistakes, to see what levels of electrolytes they need for a given set of circumstances. The actual implementation is very organic rather than formulated.

Re: Stare Down Mediocrity

Brilliant! Now, if Pete wants Kristian to perform at racing he needs all Kristians athletes to run for the diet cliff and be completely uncoachable in the last couple of weeks before a race. Rub his nose it it minute by minute, social media, phone, etc everywhere he looks it's staring right back at him. Kristian needs to find a way to channel all the emotions this generates within him and out pops a great performance. It works so many ways, Pete gets to give it to krisitan indirectly, which he is going no doubt love, since I am absolutely sure Pete cops heaps from the boss on a daily basis. The joy of ranting. Have fun.
